R & J
R&J is based in Kirkby Malzeard, only 15 miles from Harrogate, and was founded in 1978 by Robert and Jo Atkinson, both from farming families and both very much still involved in the everyday running of the business today. Their son Ryan, who now manages the business, is the fifth generation of the family to be involved in farming.
R&J is one of the very few catering butchers in the country to maintain their own herd, and an informal cooperative of suppliers who have all been chosen for their focus on taste, free grazing and animal welfare.
Weetons is really proud to work with R&J, knowing that we are guaranteeing our customers the best quality local meat available. Our Head Butcher Colin, has worked closely with MD Ryan Atkinson to agree a specification and quality that is second to none for Weetons customers, and we thought it would be interesting to hear Ryan’s top tips on how best to enjoy it.

Steenbergs was set up in 2003 by Axel and Sophie Steenberg and is based in Melmerby, North Yorkshire.
Established through a desire to bring organic, Fairtrade spices to the UK, Steenbergs have spent the last 12 years building on their ethical sourcing and artisan hand-blending skills to now be able to boast a plethora of products, ranging from spices and teas, to stuffing mixes, flavoured sugars and natural baking extracts.
We have moved twice since we set up and are now in a purpose-built, eco-friendly factory, which is just 200 yards from where we started.
We supply a wide range of organic spices, herbs and blends, as well as a selection of our home baking extracts and flavoured sugars. This Christmas we are also supplying our gift boxes of mini spice jars which make great Christmas gifts. They include Indian, Hot!Hot!Hot! and Barbecue blends.

"5 years ago we were looking for the perfect gift for our friend and couldn't find what we were looking for. Husband and wife team Janet and Paul Talling rear their chickens in grass paddocks, giving the birds plenty of space to roam and lots of lovely grass to feed on (which produces high levels of the fatty acid Omega-3 and gives their meat with a distinctive golden hue). This is a chicken like you have never tasted before. Furthermore, as an animal welfare and behavioural scientist, Janet has made it her mission to ensure their birds all live happy, healthy and most importantly, stress-free life. Loose birds of Harome have raised the bar of farming this humble bird and the results are there for the tasting.

Each year, as a new Spring dawns, we eagerly await the eight-week asparagus season but with such a short season, we believe it’s crucial to stock the finest harvest.
George Morrell Farms, a family-owned business based in Plumpton, near Knaresborough, was established more than 60 years ago and today cultivates asparagus of the ‘Ariane’ variety which is renowned for its superior taste. With just 18 acres of land to harvest, the cream of the asparagus crop is in such demand that almost all of it is destined for the plates of discerning customers in Yorkshire! Need we say more?

NEW YORKSHIRE EMPORIUM
Chilli Sauces, Spicy Pickles, Chilli Nuts and Stuff made by hand. A family business based in Holmfirth led by husband and wife team Guy and Carly Thorpe. With over 20 years in the catering industry, Yorkshire lad Guy set out to replicate the flavour of smoky barbeque after a trip to the US and By'eck! Chilli Sauce was born. Guy crafts in small batches to ensure quality to create their range of chilli sauces, spicy pickles and nuts which combine that traditional smoky American barbecue experience with a bit of Yorkshire magic.
When not chopping, Guy spends his time indulging his barbecue habit, nurturing his pinball obsession, and progressing his mission to play all the crazy golf courses in the UK. His wife Carly is a construction lawyer by day, but spends her spare time keeping Guy out of trouble. Her favourite activity is eating (which could be why she married a chef) – unsurprisingly, all products are taste tested by Carly.
SHEPHERD'S PURSE ARTISAN CHEESE
Shepherds Purse Artisan Cheeses was founded in the late 1980’s when Judy Bell, discovered her passion and talent for cheese making as she set out on a mission to create quality dairy alternatives for cow’s milk allergy sufferers. Judy Mum won her first Gold award in 1989 with Olde York at Nantwich International Cheese Show and awards have been an important part of Shepherds Purse since.
In 2017 their Harrogate Blue won Super Gold at the World Cheese awards and being name in the top 15 cheeses in the World! Having started by making cheese only from sheep milk, the range was extended to include cow's milk and even water buffalo milk cheeses. Today, the company is best known for blue cheeses: Yorkshire Blue and Harrogate Blue, and for sheeps milk Mediterranean salad-style cheese, Yorkshire Fettle and our sheep milk blue Mrs Bell's Blue.
As Shepherds Purse has grown, it has remained a proud, independent family business making cheese in the traditional way on our farm in North Yorkshire. The Shepherds Purse team is now a team of 30 passionate artisans being led by Judy’s two daughters Katie and Caroline.

As fifth generation hill-sheep farmers, the Hird family know a thing or two about a hard day’s work and just what’s needed to fuel it.
They started making their own-recipe granola when visitors staying overnight at the farm enjoyed it for breakfast and kept coming back for more. They soon added porridge and muesli to the range and have been making more and more ever since!
Initially, diversification was seen as a way to support their farm at Yockenthwaite in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales but it soon became new passion! Still a small family business (and still happily farming), the Hird's are as committed as ever to creating naturally delicious food, full of the flavour and texture their award-winning range is renowned for.
Whixley Grange Farm is owned by the Voakes family who have farmed in North Yorkshire for over 40 years and hold an exemplary record for animal husbandry which still continues today.
Voakes pork pies are produced from pigs which are bred exclusively at Whixley Grange. Only the best cuts of pork and carefully selected ingredients are used to produce our award winning pies for today’s discerning market.
The production unit for Voakes Pies is purpose built, providing a superb quality controlled environment in which we can maintain our high standards, and we look forward to the continued expansion of production at Whixley Grange.

YORKSHIRE DALES DISTILLERY
Sarah and Tony Brotherton settled in a small village on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and established Yorkshire Dales Distillery in April 2016. Their passion for handcrafted quality spirits is born from a longstanding family love for and work in the industry.
Tony’s cottage farm living grandparents were the original G&T fans inspiring a passion for home grown quality and the finest natural ingredients; Grandad used to scrimp on the gin for himself if times were hard but he always made sure that Grandma had her share.
There is a rapidly growing Team at the Distillery and the employment and training of Veterans, ex-offenders , young people and the long term unemployed is prioritised.
