R & J
R&J is based in Kirkby Malzeard, only 15 miles from Harrogate, and was founded in 1978 by Robert and Jo Atkinson, both from farming families and both very much still involved in the everyday running of the business today. Their son Ryan, who now manages the business, is the fifth generation of the family to be involved in farming.
R&J is one of the very few catering butchers in the country to maintain their own herd, and an informal cooperative of suppliers who have all been chosen for their focus on taste, free grazing and animal welfare.
Weetons is really proud to work with R&J, knowing that we are guaranteeing our customers the best quality local meat available. Our Head Butcher Colin, has worked closely with MD Ryan Atkinson to agree a specification and quality that is second to none for Weetons customers, and we thought it would be interesting to hear Ryan’s top tips on how best to enjoy it.

Steenbergs was set up in 2003 by Axel and Sophie Steenberg and is based in Melmerby, North Yorkshire.
Established through a desire to bring organic, Fairtrade spices to the UK, Steenbergs have spent the last 12 years building on their ethical sourcing and artisan hand-blending skills to now be able to boast a plethora of products, ranging from spices and teas, to stuffing mixes, flavoured sugars and natural baking extracts.
We have moved twice since we set up and are now in a purpose-built, eco-friendly factory, which is just 200 yards from where we started.
We supply a wide range of organic spices, herbs and blends, as well as a selection of our home baking extracts and flavoured sugars. This Christmas we are also supplying our gift boxes of mini spice jars which make great Christmas gifts. They include Indian, Hot!Hot!Hot! and Barbecue blends.

"5 years ago we were looking for the perfect gift for our friend and couldn't find what we were looking for. We wanted something practical & personal that would remind them of their special day forever, and so Marbletree was born," says Jayne Little, one half of the brother and sister team that run Marbletree.

COTE HILL FARM
Michael and Mary Davenport have been dairy farming at Cote Hill Farm for more than 30 years; most recently diversifying into cheese making and they have never looked back.
A real family affair, Michael milks their herd of 70 Red Poll, Friesian / Holstein cows twice a day and the creamy nectar is taken directly to the cheese vats where it is hand crafted into an outstanding range of cheeses by wife Mary and son Joe.
Throughout the Summer the cows graze in clover-rich pasture and in Winter, feast on grass and maize silage together with red clover haylage. This home-produced forage, together with high standards of herd management, produces top quality award-winning milk that is rich in butterfat and protein; Left unpasteurised it enables the cheese to achieve a distinct flavour quite unique to Cote Hill Farm.
Michael and Mary liken the cheese making process to that of producing a fine wine, whereby the individuality of the land is absorbed into and reflected within the character of each cheese. This is cheese, but not as you know it.

SWALEDALE CHEESE COMPANY
The family - run Swaledale Cheese Company has been making award-winning cheeses for almost 25 years using traditional methods and recipes that have been passed down through the generations.
It is said that Cistercian monks shared their cheese making skills with the farmers of Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales as far back as the 11th century. Today, the Company produces a wide range of high-quality, distinctive tasting cheeses, to the same time-honoured methods and most recently have been awarded PDO status (protected designation of origin) by the European Union. This means that only cheese that is made in Swaledale can bear the Swaldale name. It's the Gold seal for this well deserving acclaimed producer - definitely one to look out for on our cheese counter.

If chickens could choose where to live, they'd definitely opt for the health-spa standards of comfort that can be found at Loose Birds of Harome!
Husband and wife team Janet and Paul Talling rear their chickens in grass paddocks, giving the birds plenty of space to roam and lots of lovely grass to feed on (which produces high levels of the fatty acid Omega-3 and gives their meat with a distinctive golden hue). This is a chicken like you have never tasted before. Furthermore, as an animal welfare and behavioural scientist, Janet has made it her mission to ensure their birds all live happy, healthy and most importantly, stress-free life. Loose birds of Harome have raised the bar of farming this humble bird and the results are there for the tasting.

GEORGE MORRELL FARMS
Each year, as a new Spring dawns, we eagerly await the eight-week asparagus season but with such a short season, we believe it’s crucial to stock the finest harvest.
George Morrell Farms, a family-owned business based in Plumpton, near Knaresborough, was established more than 60 years ago and today cultivates asparagus of the ‘Ariane’ variety which is renowned for its superior taste. With just 18 acres of land to harvest, the cream of the asparagus crop is in such demand that almost all of it is destined for the plates of discerning customers in Yorkshire! Need we say more?
