About Weeton's

Weeton's is owned, managed and supplied by farmers. The business was formed in early 2005 as a partnership between three dairy farmers, father and son team John and Andrew Loftus, and John Grantchester. Both John Loftus and John Grantchester have been prominent in dairy farming circles for several decades and have achieved considerable success breeding pedigree livestock and in the show ring.

Weeton's takes its name from the Loftus family's famous Weeton Herd of pedigree Holstein Friesians, founded by Frank Loftus at Preese Hall Farm four generations ago and today comprising over 700 head of cattle. In October over 200 head from the Weeton Herd will be sold at auction on the farm. Today Andrew Loftus is the Managing Director and driving force behind Weeton's, aided by a superb team of butchers and food lovers here at the shop. Andrew gave up his career in the City of London to run Weeton's; he is convinced that the market for high quality locally- produced food will continue to grow strongly and provides the key to reviving the flagging fortunes of many family farms.

One example is our Triple Curd Cheese, made with the milk from our own herd. It's only available here at Weeton's and is consistently our best seller. Another is our meat: everything you can see in the shop is produced here in Yorkshire. For example our lamb comes from Anne Robinson's farm in Pannal, just south of Harrogate - you couldn't really get much more local! At the moment we're selling 14 of Anne's lambs each week. This level of local buying makes a real difference to our farmers - it equates to over 700 lambs a year, or the entire output of several local farms.

To mark our second anniversary the team here have complied some key statstics on our Yorkshire produce:

  1. Stocking 1200 lines of Yorkshire food from over 50 local farms

  2. Selling 14 local lambs per week, that's 728 per year

  3. Selling 8 sides of locally produced beef per week or 416 sides per year

  4. Welcoming 250,000 local shoppers through the doors

  5. Employing 23 local staff

  6. Selling over 2,000 locally produced sausages per week

  7. Stocking over 50 different cuts of meat

  8. Selling 5 tonnes of locally produced cheese per year

  9. Launching over 100 brand new Yorkshire products in store in 2007

  10. Spreading the 'eat local' message across the county

Weeton's is all about supporting local farmers and food producers. By eating local produce you not only get the best tasting, freshest food but you also help to sustain the wonderful farming landscapes of Yorkshire. Today these landscapes are under pressure as never before. By your choices as a consumer you can help to protect them for the future.
